Katy Perry admits she knows nothing about AFL ahead of her anticipated Grand Final performance: ‘It’s a game with a ball’

US popstar Katy Perry has revealed the extent of her AFL knowledge ahead of her anticipated appearance at Saturday’s Grand Final in Melbourne.

Katy, 39, appeared on The Project on Wednesday when host Waleed Ali asked how much she knew about the game at which she is set to perform.

Offering a deer-in-headlights expression to camera, Katy began to comically stammer through her response.

‘It’s a great game…with a ball,’ she meekly responded to much applause and laughter in the studio.

Katy did recognise one apect of the game – the attire of the players – when panelist Sarah Harris asked if she had seen the uniforms.

‘Short shorts,’ she excitedly exclaimed.

While she said she was keen to learn more about the sport during her Down Under jaunt, Katy did, at least, know which teams were playing in the big game.

‘I love it. I know it’s the Lions and the Swans,’ she said.

‘Yes I’m singing Roar and there is no advantage there. I was going to sing it before the Lions got in.

‘I’m really excited to learn a lot more,’ she continued. ‘I noticed that the AFL existed before the NFL, that means the Americans are copying the Australians.’

Katy was then pressed on which team she would be throwing her support behind come the weekend.

‘I am going to stay Switzerland on that,’ she said. ‘But I am pretty confused. How did Melbourne not make it? They have 12 teams.’

Elsewhere during the interview, the songstress revealed how pop icon Madonna helped her out early in her career.

‘Madonna was really nice to me, well it took a minute because she was testing me and then she became super nice to me.’

Katy then revealed that Madonna helped kick start her career after ‘shouting out’ her 2007 single Ur So Gay during an interview on the JohnJay and Rich radio show.

‘She actually shouted out my song and that was really the beginning of my career – that’s kind of what started to break me,’ Katy said.

When Sarah Harris asked how the star was tested by Madonna, Katy remained mysterious.

‘She just does her Madonna thing,’ Katy said.

‘She would invite me to a party and we had to do a photoshoot together which was amazing. She’s the greatest.’

Continuing to gush over her idol, Katy added that she still owes a debt of gratitude to the Material Girl for the trails she blazed.

‘Every female [artist] still needs to continue to say thank you to her,’ she said.

‘I’m 40 I still get to do music because of Madonna.’
