Katy Perry will be the woman of the hour at next month’s MTV Video Music Awards.

The 143 artist, 39, has been announced to perform at the 41st annual awards show, where she will also be honored with the Video Vanguard Award.

‘Katy is a musical powerhouse and true pop culture icon,’ said Bruce Gillmer, chief content officer of music at Paramount+ and president of music, music talent, programming and events at Paramount in a statement, according to AP.

‘With her game changing creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages,’ added Gillmer.

The award comes after Perry graced fans with her musical comeback last year, dropping the lead single Woman’s World from her seventh studio album 143 – which flopped in the charts.

Perry was met with mixed reviews after releasing the song’s patriotic-themed video that leaned into pseudo-empowering female tropes.

‘We’re kind of just having fun, being a bit sarcastic with it,’ she defended the visual in a behind-the-scenes clip. ‘It’s very slapstick and very on the nose.

‘With this set it’s like, “Oooh, we’re not about the male gaze, but we really are about the male gaze.” And we’re really overplaying it and on the nose,’ explained Perry.

Meanwhile, Perry has been met with backlash after her latest video for ‘Lifetimes’ was filmed on protected sand dunes in the Balearic Islands.

The Spanish archipelago’s government has since launched an investigation after production took place without approval.

‘The local video production company assured us that all necessary permits for the video were secured,’ a representative for Perry’s label, Capitol Records, told Variety.

‘We have since learned that one permit was in process, although we were given verbal authority to go ahead.’

The rep added, ‘We adhered to all regulations associated with filming in this area and have the utmost respect for this location and the officials tasked with protecting it.’

This will be Perry’s first time at the VMAs since she performed and hosted in 2017.

Since winning Video of the Year in 2011 for ‘Firework’, Perry has collected five VMAs throughout her career.

Previous honorees of the Video Vanguard Award include Shakira, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Missy Elliott.

This year’s VMAs was postponed a day so not to conflict with the presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sept. 11 at 8pm ET.
