- Tom’s boat was sucked into the swirling water and he was submerged
A kayaker was sucked into a whirlpool and got trapped beneath the rushing water when a group of friends crossed a turbulent river in Canada.
Friends Tom Dunphy, Joel Brennan and Devyn Scott were kayaking the Ottawa River in Ontario when they decided to tackle whirlpools at a notorious piece of water – the Butchers Knife Rapid.
The rapid is called Butchers Knife because of the sharp rocks on shore.
The first two passed through but when Tom headed in, the whirlpool seemed to suck his boat down below the surging waters.
But he eventually righted his boat and the three paddled away from the whirlpools to safety.
‘Tom, Joel and I were out kayaking on the mighty Ottawa River and decided to test our luck going in the whirlpools at Butchers Knife Rapid,’ Devyn, who filmed the incident, said.
‘Tom was fine at the end though and then we went down the rest of the river,’ he said.
