Australia’s number one fitness expert, Kayla Itsines, has shared the reason she has chosen not to drink alcohol.

‘I never really liked the taste, the way it made me feel, or any of the experiences I had associated with it,’ she wrote.

‘I have not had alcohol in six years (almost seven) and I probably will never drink it again.’

Although we all know that alcoholic beverages are filled with unnecessary calories, Kayla’s decision to avoid drinking has nothing to do with this reason.

‘I feel that I am a role model for a lot of young girls and I would love to show them that it’s okay not to drink if you don’t want to.

‘I am proud to spread that message. You don’t need to feel like you HAVE TO drink alcohol to fit in. You can still be social and have fun without it.’

‘This isn’t me trying to raise myself up or make anyone feel bad for drinking it, it’s just something that I have chosen for MY life.’

Kayla went on to say that she has clients that drink and so does her partner but it is a choice that she has made personally.

In a previous Instagram post in 2015 Kayla went into emotional detail as to why she has made this decision.

‘A few years ago I lost someone VERY close to me as a result of a drug and alcohol addiction.’

‘I watched the downwards spiral of someone I loved and I vowed that I would never drink again,’ she said.

‘I don’t like alcohol. I don’t like the taste. I don’t like what it does to people. I don’t like how people abuse it and I hate what it did to someone I loved.’

Although she explained that she had drunk alcohol before, in this post she swore that she would never drink it again – not even in moderation.

‘I don’t mind if people drink it. I’m not one of those “anti alcohol, alcohol is the devil”, people, I just don’t drink and I never will. I hope you can all respect my reasons why.’

The first time she spoke about her choice was in a 2014 Facebook post where she said that when she was 16 she couldn’t drink a sip without her body rejecting it.

‘I could not even stand the smell of it. I NEVER liked it. Ever. I thought it tasted like poison.’

Kayla was able to tolerate drinking more when she was 17 to 19 and stated that she would have roughly three to six drinks once a week.

She explained that with her lifestyle change her attitude changed and she was no longer finding fulfillment in getting drunk on the weekend

‘But, EVERY TIME, I would feel really sick. My body just hated it. I just knew I wasn’t confident enough to go out without having a drink in my hand. I just wanted to fit in.’

‘Once I started seriously getting into fitness I literally could not afford to drink. Not because of the money, I could not afford the time and effort it took to recover.

‘I couldn’t afford to feel like crap. I wanted an amazing body, an amazing lifestyle and I needed energy for my long work hours.’

She explained that with her lifestyle change her attitude changed and she was no longer finding fulfilment in getting drunk on the weekend.

‘I stopped feeling insecure. I stopped feeling not good enough for “not drinking”. I stopped caring what others thought of me,’ she said.

‘That has hands down been the best decision of my life. I’m not telling others not to drink. You can do whatever you want with your life, I’m just sharing my experiences.

‘We all have to find our own balance in life, I’m really glad I’ve found mine. I hope you can respect that.’
