Kayla Itsines sparks a debate after using butter in her beef burger

Australia’s highest-paid fitness star Kayla Itsines has divided social media after she shared her go-to ‘speedy’ recipe for a beef burger.

The 30-year-old, from Adelaide, said burgers are her favourite dinner option on ‘lazy’ nights and it usually consists of a homemade beef patty, burger roll, tomato, lettuce, red onion, tomato sauce and butter – the latter addition critiqued by some.

‘This dinner is so quick to make if I’m feeling particularly lazy and just want to throw an easy meal together. ‘It literally takes no time at all to just chop up a few veggies and make some mince burger patties,’ the mum-of-one wrote on her Instagram.

‘People sometimes think that they can’t have things like burgers, or pasta if they are trying to eat healthily, but you absolutely can. It’s just about making healthy decisions, instead of thinking that you have to eliminate things entirely.’

However, many quickly pointed out the ‘unusual’ condiment she used in her burger.

Do you add butter to your burger?

‘Butter as the condiment is blowing my mind,’ one wrote, while another said: ‘Butter? Is this an Aussie thing? So interesting the different ways of doing things around the world. Even something as simple as a burger.’

‘Did you put butter on a burger?!’ another added, while one woman confirmed: ‘Butter makes everything better.’

And another added: ‘I’ve never put butter on my burger! I thought that was mayonnaise. I’ll have to try it.’

To assemble, she added tomato sauce to the bottom bun, topped with the patty, sliced tomatoes, fresh lettuce and red onion, while she buttered the top bun.

‘I used beef mince but you could use chicken, lamb, or turkey mince. You can also buy some really great plant-based burger patties from the supermarket, or even just use a big Portobello mushroom as the patty,’ she said.

Many said her dinner has inspired them to recreate their own burgers at home, with some saying that ‘looks so yummy’.

While one woman debated about the order she preferred when assembling a burger.

‘I’ll never understand putting condiments on the very top or bottom. I always put them between the lettuce, cheese and patty – otherwise it soaks into the bread so fast! I take my condiments very seriously,’ she said.

Her dinner idea comes as Kayla is named among Australia’s richest young entrepreneurs in the Financial Review Young Rich List.

She began her Sweat fitness app business on Instagram in 2009 and comes in at number 39 after amassing $164million as well as 13million followers.

In July, the fitness queen revealed how she made the 'best salad ever' using pre-cooked supermarket roast chicken, a handful of fresh vegetables and a DIY salad dressing

In July, the fitness queen revealed how she made the ‘best salad ever’ using pre-cooked supermarket roast chicken.

She created her ‘favourite lunch’ that ‘took no time at all to make’ after she tossed together shredded chicken, a handful of fresh vegetables and a DIY salad dressing.

‘For my new favourite salad, what I’ll do is grab a roast chicken from my supermarket and shred it all up. The salad base is a mixture of chopped up fresh tomatoes, capsicum, cucumber, red onion, brown rice, and basil,’ she wrote on Instagram.

‘I’ll then top the salad with the shredded chicken, some burrata (the most delicious creamy cheese), olive oil, salt, oregano and balsamic glaze.

The founder of SWEAT said you could easily swap the chicken out for any leftover protein you have from your previous meals.

The mum-of-one explained why lunches don’t have to be ‘super complicated’ or ‘fancy to make them delicious’.

‘I normally go for something very simple like a Mediterranean salad, with tuna, brown rice (or pasta), and I would be very happy to eat that every day,’ she said.

‘Having quick and easy meals means that it’s more convenient for you – it’s easier to reach for something healthy if it’s super simple to prepare.

‘Some people find that the best way for them is to meal prep for the week ahead, or have ingredients cut up and ready in the fridge to use.’
