Keith Urban breaks his silence and reveals what really happened at the Sydney Opera House after an opera lover ‘swatted his wife Nicole Kidman’ during her standing ovation

Keith Urban and his wife Nicole Kidman found themselves in a heated exchange with an opera lover at the Sydney Opera House last month.

And on Friday, the 53-year-old country music star revealed what really happened during an interview on KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O show.

‘We were sitting down with Nic’s mum and we were clapping. It was a bloody great performance and everyone was cheering and cheering,’ Keith said.

‘I looked around and I see a few people standing and a few more and I thought “oh I’m getting up”.

‘And then this guy behind me just whacked Nic, like really hit her, with the program.’

Keith revealed a shocked Nicole then looked over at him and her mother Janelle and said: ‘He just hit me!’

‘It’s a bit of a pickle I was in because I’m a husband and you want to defend your wife but it took a lot of restraint. I was pretty upset,’ he said.

Keith also explained he had never been to the opera before and was unaware of the ‘opera etiquette’.

‘We did not know you are not supposed to stand in the opera. Having not been to the opera before ever in my life, I am sensitive to the etiquette,’ he said.

Earlier this month, The Sydney Morning Herald’s Private Sydney reported that Keith and Nicole had found themselves in a heated exchange with an opera lover at The Merry Widow.

The A-list couple, who attended with Nicole’s mother Janelle, cheered on the cast at the end of the performance, along with the remainder of the audience.

A disgruntled man reportedly found their applause and standing ovation at the end of the performance offensive.

The man then ‘swatted’ Nicole with his program and the couple were escorted out by Keith’s security detail.
