Kelis opens up how losing her husband Mike Mora to stomach cancer affected wellness journey

Kelis took to Instagram to open up about losing her husband, Mike Mora, on the anniversary of his passing on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old singer spoke about how her wellness journey was affected after her husband of nearly a decade passed away after a long battle with stage four stomach cancer at the age of 37.

In the three-part clip, the Bounty & Full founder explained that she started focusing on farming and wellness during her first pregnancy.

Shortly after they welcomed their third child in 2020, the photographer was diagnosed with cancer.

The Milkshake hitmaker revealed that’s when they delved more into researching on what they were putting into their bodies.

‘It’s been exactly a year,’ Kelis wrote in the caption of her post. ‘That’s crazy to me.

‘I’m a very private person generally, especially when there is family involved,’ she continued. ‘But there is no denying the impact and evolution my husband’s passing has had on my life.

‘I get asked all the time how I started this journey,’ she stated before delving into the story in her video. ‘It’s a much longer conversation but in short what we were dealing with here pushed me so deep into understanding our bodies and how our minds and emotions are so interlocked, you can not treat one without the other.

‘Our thoughts and intentions are as powerful and key as our skin health and fitness,’ she said. ‘I want to live well and this is me sharing what I know to be true.

‘I just wanted to eat well,’ she recalled on how she got into nutrition and wellness. ‘When I got pregnant, that’s when I really started to care and think about it.’

The couple had two sons — Knight, 13, and Shepherd, seven — and one daughter — Galilee, two — before Mora was told he only had 18 months to live.

While ongoing chemotherapy and treatments, Kelis said they began looking into other options, such as hyperbaric chambers and ozone therapy.

Mora started doing ozone therapy — which Kelis described as ‘game-changing’ — but the tumor unfortunately came back and ‘started to spread’.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, ozone therapy has been poorly studied, and there is little data indicating if is safe or effective. However, the so-called therapy may have significant health risks.

The songwriter then recalled meeting a ‘beautiful, brilliant’ man who invented the hyperbaric chamber and recommended a recipe of mushrooms for them to consume.

‘We [didn’t] know where to go,’ the entrepreneur said. ‘We go to doctors for things that don’t make any sense.’

She continued. ‘[But] really it’s our foods — it’s how we’re eating, it’s how we’re living, and breathing and putting our feet in the soil.’

Because of these events, Kelis said she began to make so-called ‘brain food’ and rebranded her Bounty & Full sauce company to also focus more on lifestyle and wellness aspects.

She explained that it was too late for her husband to make these changes and see any benefits, but she began to implement more superfoods and nutrients into her family’s diet.

The Kaleidoscope singer also added that the reason she lives a on a farm in a rural area is because ‘stress kills’.

‘Every doctor we saw, every specialist, every nutritionist, every human being we found that had any expertise in this whatsoever was like: “Stress kills”,’ she said.

‘I moved to the farm and we wanted to separate ourselves from all the silly things that had us stressed out and worried and angst and all these things that didn’t really matter,’ she continued.
