Kelly Clarkson gets candid about getting on antidepressants amid Brandon Blackstock divorce

Kelly Clarkson gets candid about getting on antidepressants amid divorce… after she could no longer ‘smile anymore for America’

Kelly Clarkson says she began taking antidepressants in the wake of her 2020 split with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock.

The 41-year-old entertainer appeared Wednesday on the podcast Las Culturistas, where she opened up to hosts Matt Rogers, 33, and Bowen Yang, 32, about how she got through a difficult time.

The Fort Worth, Texas-born star, who shares daughter River Rose, nine, and son Remington Alexander, seven, with Blackstock, 46, said that she broke down during a therapy session and began weeping.

‘I looked at my therapist and I just couldn’t stop sobbing, and I was like, “I actually had to cancel some of the other day because I couldn’t stop crying, I cannot do this,”‘ Clarkson said on the podcast, which is from iHeartMedia and Will Ferrell’s Big Money Players Network.

The My Life Would Suck Without You artist said her decision to begin taking anti-depressants ‘was one of those things where I really had to put my pride aside and like all my childhood issues of whatever.’

The Kelly Clarkson Show host filed for divorce from Blackstock in June of 2020 after a seven-year marriage, with the split being finalized a year ago.

She said in the podcast, ‘I was on Lexapro for like, I think two months. My thing was, I just can’t smile anymore for America right now. I’m not happy and I need help … and it was honest to God, the greatest decision ever.

Clarkson said she ‘wouldn’t have made it’ without the medication; and that she channeled feelings about the relationship into her new studio album Chemistry.

The A Moment Like This songstress said last week on the Today show that she and her ex-husband had a ‘little text exchange’ about the content of the new record.

‘I don’t even remember why or how it happened, but I was like, “Hey, I didn’t just diminish us down to one” thing, Clarkson said. ‘You know what I’m saying? It’s all in there, the ride.’

Clarkson said that multiple ‘very personal’ aspects of the relationship are covered in the album, as ‘there’s a lot of pain’ but ‘the beauty is in there, as well.’

She added, ‘I’ve always released personal music – I think I’m that kind of writer in general, everybody knows that. I think when you have kids … you kind of debate, “What am I going to do here?”

‘So I was very selective about the songs I picked for the album.’
