In a sign of Australia’s changing dining habits, KFC customers who order on an app are spending 20 per cent more than those who visit one of the fast food giant’s restaurants.

Collins Foods, the company which operates the largest number of Kentucky Fried Chicken outlets in Australia, has revealed its net profit fattened by 20 per cent $39million in the year to April 2019. 

It also told the Australian Securities Exchange app sales were ‘showing strong and consistent growth’.

Its annual report for the 2019 financial year was coy about the surge in smartphone sales as its revenue widened by 16.9 per cent to $901.2million.

However, a year ago Collins Foods revealed online home delivery orders for KFC in Australia had doubled in just one year.

‘There continues to be steady growth in our online ordering app, which now attracts more than 20,000 orders per week or more than double the level at the end of last financial year,’ its annual report for the 2018 financial year said. 

‘Feedback from customers is positive and the average ticket is approximately 20 per cent higher on the app compared to in-store orders.’

KFC now has Menulog and Deliveroo options for 64 restaurants in Australia.

Collins Foods chief executive Graham Maxwell said on Tuesday an expansion of digital and home delivery services were expected to ‘drive further growth’.

‘Innovation and great value remain at the heart of KFC Australia,’ he said. 

Collins Foods also operates KFC in Europe, Sizzler restaurants in Australia, China, Thail and Japan, and Taco Bell outlets in Queensland.
