Khawaja remains strong as Australia take lead over…

Usman Khawaja remained steadfastly immovable as Australia took an ominous lead over England on the third afternoon of the final Ashes Test at the SCG.

England’s bowlers were disciplined but still powerless to stop Khawaja’s slow grind towards a double-century as he swapped Steve Smith (83) for new partner Shaun Marsh (54no) in Australia’s teatime 365 for three.

The hosts were therefore 19 in front, with huge power to add, after two full sessions had yielded only the wicket of Smith – caught-and-bowled by Moeen Ali just before lunch to end a stand of 188.

Khawaja (166no) continued remorselessly, having registered his first Ashes hundred from 222 balls and then had one notable escape on 132 when debutant Mason Crane would have bagged a maiden Test wicket lbw on DRS if only he had not marginally overstepped for a no-ball.
