Kieran Culkin didn’t know his brother Macaulay Culkin was the star of Home Alone until the premiere

Kieran Culkin has shared that he didn’t know his older brother Macaulay Culkin had the lead role in the 1990 movie Home Alone until the premiere.

Kieran, now 42, was unaware of his sibling’s starring turn as Kevin McCallister despite having a minor role as Kevin’s cousin Fuller in the family comedy.

While promoting his latest project, a movie called A Real Pain, the Succession star told the LA Times: ‘Devin Ratray, the guy who plays Buzz, lied to me and told me the movie was all about him.’

He recalled, ‘I had no idea what that movie was about when I saw it, and I was in it. I was at the premiere, and I was dying laughing. It was the funniest thing I had ever seen. I had no idea what the movie was about.’

In retrospect, Kieran said, ‘And then when I saw it, the movie’s cracking me up, and I go, “Mac was on set all the time. That makes sense the movie would be about him.”‘

The younger Culkin said he was told to ‘drink this Coke, wear the glasses, say the thing that you memorized, look cute and go home.’

The feature film was shot from February to May 1990, with the premiere taking place shortly before its November 16 release.

Kiernan also told James Corden in 2020 about his time on the Home Alone set: ‘I had fun doing it, but I really didn’t know what it was about.’

The star, who is now an Emmy winner, was six-years-old when filming took place, while Macaulay, now 44, was nine.

He recently revealed why he has not allowed his young children — daughter Kinsey, five, and son Wilder, three — to watch Home Alone.

‘There’s still some scary parts,’ Kieran explained to  E! News at The Gothams 34th Annual Film Awards earlier this week.

‘For the three-year-old, there’s the tarantula [and] there’s the guy at the end who said: “I’m gonna bite off all your fingers.” That’s scary for a three-year-old,’ the protective father noted.

He added about himself and wife Jazz Charton: ‘We think they might be ready for Home Alone this year. If not, next year.’

Kieran unlocked a new level when he appeared on HBO’s hit drama Succession from 2018-2023.

The show starred Brian Cox as Logan Roy, the patriarch of a wealthy media dynasty.

Logan’s children were played by Kieran, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook and Adam Ruck, and other stars in the cast included Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun and Palestinian actress/director Hiam Abbass.

The show earned 19 Emmys during its time on air.

Meanwhile, Macaulay has also returned to acting, with recent small screen roles, including a gig on the megachurch satire The Righteous Gemstones.

He has also appeared in Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Double Feature and the cartoon The Second Best Hospital In The Galaxy.
