Kieran Reilly clinches BMX Freestyle Olympic silver with thrilling second run- as the cyclist adds Team GB’s fifth medal of the day in Paris

Britain’s Kieran Reilly claimed silver for Britain in the men’s BMX Freestyle final at the Paris Olympics with a thrilling second run.

The reigning world champion was last to compete in the final having topped qualification on Tuesday at the Place de la Concorde.

Reilly had been assured of a bronze ahead of his final run, with the Briton having been pushed down the standings after a superb performance by France’s Anthony Jeanjean.

The home favourite had been forced to abort his opening run, but produced a spectacular second to move above Reilly into second.

Reilly produced his own impressive second run of the competition as he aimed to displace Argentina’s Jose Torres Gil at the top of the standings.

The 23-year-old from Newcastle collapsed to his knees as his final score was confirmed, with 93.91 falling short of the 94.82 required to beat Torres Gil.

His score, however, proved enough to move Reilly back above Jeanjean to secure the silver medal.

The silver medal continued Britain’s success in BMX Freestyle, which was introduced to the Olympics at Tokyo 2020.

Declan Brooks won bronze in the same event in the Japanese capital, the same day Charlotte Worthington had won gold.

Torres Gil’s triumph marked the first time Argentina had won gold in an individual cycling event at the Olympic Games.

The 29-year-old’s triumph ended Argentina’s wait for an Olympic title, with the nation having failed to secure at gold in Tokyo.
