Kim Kardashian calls cancel culture ‘ridiculous’ and regrets telling Kanye to take off MAGA hat

Kim Kardashian has railed against the ‘ridiculous’ cancel culture plaguing America and says she now regrets trying to force husband Kanye West to take off his MAGA hat during a 2018 appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Kardashian – who says she likes the ‘rights’ that Democrats believe in and the ‘taxes’ that Republicans fight for – made the comments in an interview with Bari Weiss for her Substack channel Common Sense on Wednesday.

The pair discussed her recently passing the baby bar law exam, and how she has no regrets about working with former President Donald Trump to get people out of prison, despite how unpopular he may be among her fans.

She also revealed that her eight-year-old daughter North has now apologized to her for going live on TikTok without her permission in a now viral video.

On Kanye’s hat, Kardashian said: ‘I was very nervous. I didn’t want him to wear the red hat. I’m not really a rule breaker, so my personality would be like, “OK, you guys don’t like the red hat? I’ll take it off.’”

‘I remember other people were around and it became a thing where he wasn’t going to go on because he wanted to be who he is. I’m very neutral, but that night I was very forceful with him, and argued with him like, “You have to take that hat off.”

‘And now looking back, I think, why should he take that off if that’s what he believes in? Why can’t he wear that on TV? Half of the country voted for him, so clearly other people like him,’ Kardashian said.

Kanye West

In 2018, Kanye West appeared on Saturday Night Live (right) wearing a MAGA hat. Kim Kardashian (seen left last week) has revealed her regret at trying to get him to remove it, and says he and others should be free to believe in what they want

On cancel culture, she told Weiss: ‘If I worried about every last thing that someone said and I had to try to change it, then I would never be me. Anyone wouldn’t be them!

‘That’s why I think cancel culture is the most ridiculous thing, because I really do believe—and you and I have been at several dinners together where people are discussing their thoughts on it—in rehabilitation and freedom of speech.

‘I’ve never really been into cancel culture.’

Kardashian, 41, told Weiss it felt ‘so f*****g good’ to finally pass the law exam this week after failing three times.

‘When you’re not right out of college and your mind is not in a study mindset, it definitely takes a second to recalibrate. And then you’re like, “Oh my God, am I just so old that I’m not retaining this information now? What’s happening? Why aren’t I passing this?” But I did it. And it felt so f*****g good,’ she said.

She revealed that when she wanted to get Alice Johnson out of prison in 2018, her first call was to Ivanka Trump, who sympathized with her and told her to contact her husband Jared.

‘My first call was to Ivanka Trump. I said, “You’re a woman. I’m sure you can understand as a mother.” She was so empathetic and understood. And she said: “Why don’t you talk to my husband, Jared?” And I brought him the case, and it took him a few months.

‘He really researched it and got the president behind it, and he granted her clemency and eventually gave her a pardon.’

The pair’s interview took place after North went viral this week by posting a TikTok Live from inside their mansion, where she showed her mother lying in bed.

Kardashian cut the video short, yelling: ‘It’s not allowed!’

She told Weiss on Wednesday: ‘North West is Kanye West’s daughter. Forget that, she’s his twin. So she will still definitely do all of the above.

‘But in my household, there are rules.

‘She did feel really bad about that, and she apologized to me and she said “I saw on TikTok that I got in trouble and I’m really sorry.” And she got it.’

In a lightning round of questions towards the end of the interview, Kardashian said she often goes out in ‘disguise’ wearing a hat, sunglasses and a ‘baseball hat’.

She also described Sarah Jessica Parker as ‘the nicest celebrity on the planet’, and that she ‘believes in the rights that the Democrats want’ and ‘the taxes that the Republicans want’: ‘I’m a mix of both.’

Kardashian said she has no plans to run for public office as of ‘right now’ because of how difficult the job is.

‘I understand the responsibility, and it’s an extremely hard job, and I don’t know if I’d ever want that,’ she said.

The pair did not discuss Kardashian’s divorce from West, or her romance with comedian Pete Davidson.

She revealed that her favorite shows are Hoarders and Dateline, and that her daughter North is the only person who intimidates her.

‘Who intimidates me? I was going to say politicians, but they don’t. Maybe just my daughter, North.’

They did discuss her beauty and social media influence, and how she has a ‘thick skin’ because of her enormous fame.

‘[Social media] is not for everyone, and I respect that. It’s definitely allowed me to grow a thick skin and to move more confidently knowing that, “OK, I’m going to post this and this is what I believe in.” This is why I’m not a tweeter and deleter. I try to always stay true to what I believe in and only post that.

‘I get that it can look like this fake world, but it can also just be a photo album of your cutest and best memories. So I do understand how negative it can be, and I have kids and I’ve started a TikTok recently with my daughter. We had to think about the decision of keeping comments on, or taking comments off. She only looks at it when she’s on my phone.

‘All of these are really big decisions, and I’ll do anything to protect my kids and I get it from all sides. I don’t think that there’s going to ever be a right answer because it’s exactly like that quote.’
