The Baby Bar – AKA the First-Year Law Students’ Examination

The California Baby Bar is is a one-day test given in June and November and consists of four one-hour essay questions and 100 multiple-choice questions.

The exam only covers three subjects: Contracts, Criminal Law, and Torts.

Applicants must pass the test within three consecutive attempts.

Because California’s bar exam is notoriously difficult and the pass rate is low, the baby bar was introduced in the first year.

It needs to pass to be allowed to continue to study.

Kim has already focused much of her time on criminal justice reform and helped get Alice Marie Johnson pardoned from a life sentence stemming from a 1996 conviction on nonviolent drug charges.

The reality TV queen took up her cause with then President Donald Trump and his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner.

Trump first commuted her sentence in June of 2018 and then granted her a full pardon in August last year.

Kim also visited Trump in March last year and was joined by three newly-freed prisoners – Tynice Nichole Hall, Crystal Munoz, and Judith Negron – who the then President also granted clemency to.

Kim has also advocated for death row inmates including Brandon Bernard.

The teaser kicked off with Kim seated with sisters Kourtney and Khloe on the couch, with Khloe enjoying a salad.

‘Guys I did not pass the baby bar,’ Kim said out loud to them, looking visibly disappointed.

Kim says in the one on one interview portion: ‘If you do law school the way that I’m doing it, it’s a four year program instead of your typical three year program and after year one, you have to take the baby bar.’

She added: ‘This one actually harder here than the official bar.’

The footage turned black and white while Kim then talked to her mentor, attorney Jessica Jackson virtually about her scores.

Jessica says: ‘You needed a 560, you got a 474. That’s extremely close on a test that most people are not taking in the middle of a pandemic.’

Kim says: ‘I am a failure’ to Jessica.

‘You’re not a failure Kim,’ Jessica assured Kim, who looked upset.

‘I spent six weeks straight, 10 to 12 hours straight studying and it was so important for me to take this and to not pass gets your spirit down and just makes you want to give up,’ Kim says to the camera.

Back on the couch with her sisters Kim tells them: ‘I didn’t fail by that much.’

‘I feel like dad would be really proud of you regardless. The fact that you’re pursuing this,’ Kourtney said.

‘I think it’s highly respectable what you’re doing. The time taken away from your family, your kids, your friends…’ Khloe added.

‘That’s what pisses me off, the fact that I spent all that time away from my kids. It’s like I can’t do it again. I don’t have time to do the test – it’s in November,’ Kim says.

‘November is in one month,’ Khloe states.

‘I know, and I’m filming the ending of our show, which will be so emotional. I have every birthday under the sun. It’s my birthday, it’s my 40th. I planned this whole trip, it’s too late to cancel but if I fail again then if I fail again, what was the point,’ Kim says.

‘But if you don’t take it this time, when’s the next opportunity to take it? So why don’t you just do that?’ Khloe says.

‘I don’t want to wait another year to go back to school and then I feel like I just got to the end, I almost knew everything,’ Kim says.

‘So you feel like you’re already there, stay in this headspace, push through,’ Khloe says.

‘Stay in this head space, I can try, or I could just give up.’ Kim adds.

‘I think if you take that year off, you’re going to forget about it,’ Kourtney says.

‘I don’t know I really need to think about it,’ Kim concludes.

In March, Kim revealed on Good Morning Vogue she’s now halfway through her law degree and has just two years left of studying before she can take her bar exam and become a fully qualified lawyer.

She said: ‘I’m still in law school, I have two years left. So I have two years under my belt. I actually am not doing an essay and doing this interview instead, so I’m gonna have to get up really early tomorrow to write like a two-hour essay. So that is really steady and a lot of work.’

Kim also spoke about taking a break from her studies over the past year because the COVID-19 pandemic has meant she’s been unable to meet with her teachers.

‘Even the work schedule, I would have worked non-stop and I would’ve done anything and everything at all hours and never taken into consideration just slowing down at all. This was a forced halt.’
