King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark host their first annual New Year’s dinner alongside their dashing son Prince Christian, 19, and other glamorous royals

Queen Mary of Denmark looked straight out of a fairytale this evening as she hosted the Royal Family’s annual New Year’s dinner for the first time alongside her husband King Frederik.

The Australian-born mother-of-four commanded attention in a bottle green floor-length gown, featuring a lace neckline and sleeves as well as cinched waist to showcase her enviable figure.

She teamed her velvet number with an emerald and diamond tiara and matching earrings, while sporting a glamorous makeup look and holding a sparkly silver clutch.

With her hair pinned into a half-up, half-down style, the Queen, 52, looked picture perfect as she stood next to her husband, 56, who wore a military outfit for the lavish occasion.

They were joined by their dashing son Crown Prince Christian; the 19-year-old put on a handsome display in white tie as he made what is thought to be his first appearance at the event.

The guestlist also included Princess Benedikte, 80, and the Danish King’s brother Prince Joachim, who attended with his stunning wife Princess Marie at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen.

Last year, Queen Margrethe, 84, announced her shock abdication in her New Year’s Eve address to the nation, marking the end of her era as Europe’s longest-serving monarch.

She hosted that year’s gala before her son succeeded her as the country’s monarch on January 14, 2024.

Although it was now Mary and Frederik’s turn to host the New Year’s dinner, Margrethe was still on hand at this evening’s event, stepping out in a vibrant blue gown.

Holding onto a walking stick, the former monarch sported a glittering tiara and a statement fur coat as she arrived at the royal occasion.

Her sister Princess Benedikte looked equally dazzling in a tiara, purple dress, pearl necklaces and a white fur shawl.

The Danish Royal Household’s appearance comes after Queen Mary wished royal fans a ‘peaceful and Merry Christmas’ as she posed alongside her family for a festive portrait on Instagram.

The royal appeared to be in high spirits as she posed next to her husband, King Frederik and their four children, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

She opted for a chic winter ensemble, donning a cream turtleneck jumper and chose to wear her brunette tresses down in a wavy blow-dry.

Her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe, was also included in the heartwarming photograph.

The former monarch put her best fashion foot forward, donning a pink and grey tartan patterned jacket, olive green jumper and maxi skirt, along with a pair of black chunky loafers.

She wore her grey strands up in a sleek bun along with silver earrings which matched her glitzy brooch. Fredrik’s mother beamed as she looked admiringly at her grandchildren.

The portrait was posted on their official Instagram with the caption: ‘From Marselisborg Castle, where the royal family is now gathered, we wish you a peaceful and happy Christmas.’

Today’s event marks a year since Margrethe announced that she would be abdicating in favour of her son, Frederik, taking over the throne.

It came as a shock to the Danish public, when they learned the news during her New Year’s Eve address in 2023.

Frederik officially became King of Denmark on January 14 2023, signing the paperwork for the role to be transferred over, although Margrethe has still kept her title as Queen.

In another snap posted on Instagram, Margrethe was seen smiling as she chatted to her oldest grandson, Crown Prince Christian by a Christmas tree.

The royal appears to have grown his brunette hair out longer since going to Africa for his gap year.

The future King was seen in a casual outfit with a navy blue coat and brown chinos and a pair of trainers.

The Danish teenager embarked on an ‘extended stay’ in East Africa, after graduating from high school earlier this year.

He revealed that he will be joining the military as an officer for the Guardhouse regiment in Slagelse in February.

Christian revealed he had enjoyed a varied and culturally rich experience so far, having worked with wildlife, built new houses and even managed to fit in football with the locals.

The Prince said while the experience was ‘completely different’, it would be one he never forgot.

He told Instagram at the time: ‘I have been in East Africa for almost three months. Everyday life down here is something completely different than at home.

‘The food, the culture, the climate, the wildlife, the tasks and the people make it an experience I will never forget.

‘In recent weeks I’ve been working with nature preservation. I’m both supervising and registering animals in the bush and taking care of the office on the farm.

‘Learning a lot about life down here and have helped build new houses for the employees. And then I played some good football matches with the locals.

‘But I am also starting to look forward to returning home to the family in Denmark and celebrating Christmas in a few weeks.

‘And now I’m looking forward to a new challenge in February. I’ll start working as a military officer at the Guardhouse regiment in Slagelse.’
