A man who filmed an attempted armed robbery in a KFC store has become a viral sensation after giving a hilarious interview about the attack.

Vai Lefau witnessed the attacker hold a knife to a fast-food employee’s neck at the KFC in Logan, near Brisbane, last Thursday.

Several have-a-go heroes gathered to help diffuse the situation including two men holding golf clubs.

In a tongue-in-cheek interview with 7News, Lefau said the man was probably just hungry and jokingly demanded KFC vouchers for helping to detain the man.

He said: ‘Two were holding golf clubs, trying to be Tiger Woods. Everyone evacuated, only the macho men were in there. I was one of them.’

Mr Lefau said the knife-wielding suspect was ‘sleeping’ after he was ‘knocked out’.

But as the armed man was no longer a threat Mr Lefau said his thoughts turned to fizzy drink.

He said he tried to wake the man and offered to get him some water.

‘I said I’ll get some water, I could have got me another fizzy, I was like ”ooooh I want to get some fizzy!”’ he said.

‘By the time I got back two cops came in and saw him on the ground and asked ”is this the offender?” I was like ”yeah that’s the offender, what do you think man?!”’

The South Aucklander said he began filming the incident after seeing a number of men, including ‘islanders’ and ‘a few bogans’, had handled the situation.

‘At that time in my mind my stomach was rumbling man I was hungry,’ he said.

Mr Lefau, who said he normally goes to salad bars, has pleaded for free KFC vouchers after his hilarious interview went viral.

He told the NZ Herald people had recognised him on the street as the ‘KFC dude’ and joked saying he should be signing autographs.

The knife-wielding suspect is recovering in a mental health ward at Logan hospital.

He will face a magistrate at court on Monday after he was charged with entering a premises with intent to commit an indictable offence and attempted armed robbery.
