Whether it’s your mother, favourite celebrity or dermatologist, everyone will tell you that sleeping in your makeup is one of the biggest beauty crimes you can commit.
If you don’t cleanse your face before bed, not only do you leave on the grime from the day, which clogs pores, harbors bacteria and causes fine lines, you also miss out on essential skin nutrition.
But one woman decided to take matters into her own hands and create a cosmetics range you can sleep in.
Kjaer Weis is the brainchild of Danish make-up artist, Kirsten Kjaer Weis, and is all-natural and organic make-up range you can wear to bed.
But does the makeup work as hard as Weiss claims? We asked Emma Rodin, 24, a marketing manager from London, to test it out and have her skin analysed before and after sleeping in it to see if it really lived up to the claims.
A new makeup range, Kjaer Weis, is all organic and the maker says it’s so pure you can sleep in it. We asked Emma Rodin, 24, left, with no makeup and, right, wearing the range, to test it out and have VISIA skin scans before wearing it and after sleeping in it
Weis noticed that most women she worked with had short term reactions – breakouts, redness and irritation – to conventional cosmetics with questionable ingredients lists, yet natural alternatives did not deliver professional results.
So, she set out to create her own range, which is sold on Net-a-Porter and costs around £40 per product. Her products contains 95 per cent organic ingredients, no parabens, silicone, petrochemical emulsifiers or synthetic fragrances.
Having grown up on a working farm in the remote Danish countryside, Weis, who has 20 years experience as a makeup artist, was inspired by nature when selecting the ingredients for her formulations.
Raw ingredients and natural preservatives extracted from minerals, plants and wildflowers are selected for their colour, scent and affinity with the skin – from shea butter and coconut oil as emollients to rosa damascena flower oil as fragrance.
But does the makeup work as hard as Weiss claims? We asked Emma Rodin, 24, a marketing manager from London, to test it out.
Emma had her scan analysed by a VISIA machine at the Dr Joney De Souza Clinic before and after wearing the makeup to assess whether it wreaked havoc with her skin
‘The skin looks great post-wearing the makeup,’ said Dr Joney De Souza. ‘The skin looks unchanged and healthy and felt more hydrated and supple’
Emma took before and after photos of her with the products on to test for coverage and longevity.
She also visited a dermatologist before wearing it and then spent the night sleeping with the makeup on before visiting him again in the morning to have a VISIA scan.
Emma had her scan analysed by a VISIA machine at the Dr Joney De Souza Clinic before and after wearing the makeup. The VISIA scan takes digital and UV pictures of your face to assess for dark spots, wrinkles and bacteria levels.
‘The skin looks great post-wearing the makeup,’ said Dr Joney De Souza. ‘Unlike other make up, the skin is unchanged and not damaged in any way from wearing it. The skin looks unchanged and healthy and felt more hydrated and supple.
‘There was a tiny increase in pores but not a significant variation, which is a good sign. The bacteria presence was also similar, too.’
