Klopp received some bad news about defender Joel Matip earlier in the day as the centre back is expected to be out for the rest of the season as he is set to have surgery on a thigh injury.

The injury blow comes at a crucial stage of the season with two huge games against City in the Champions League and six games left to play in the league to ensure they qualify for the European competition next season.

Liverpool head into the all-British quarter-final tie at Anfield on the back of an important win at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

And Klopp’s side also have confidence from that fact that they are only team to inflict defeat on City domestically this season.

They beat Guardiola’s side 4-3 at home in what was a thrilling encounter in January.

It is a big week for Liverpool as after Wednesday’s clash they travel to Merseyside rivals Everton in the Premier League, followed by the second leg of the quarter-final away to City on April 10.
