DIY pro transforms a $20 secondhand coffee table into a chic luxury-inspired design – and saved nearly $2000

  • Aussie mum Lyla didn’t want to spend $2000 on a chic new coffee table
  • Instead she upcycled a secondhand table bought off Facebook marketplace
  • The DIY cost her around $115 using two Kmart side tables, bleach and glue
  • The end result looked near-identical to the one she wanted to buy

A clever mum has transformed a $20 secondhand coffee table into a luxury-inspired piece of furniture – and managed to avoid spending nearly $2,000.

Lyla, from Western Australia, was inspired to upcycle the table after seeing a simple Kmart hack on Facebook.

Sharing images to a popular online group, Lyla said the DIY cost her around $115 using two $45 Kmart side tables, bleach and sand paper for her Ryboi sander.

‘I bought two of the Kmart ribbed side tables and sanded back this old table and bam! There she is,’ she wrote online.

Lyla was originally eying off coffee tables from retailers online but wasn’t willing to spend between $1200 and $2,000.

Lyla, from Western Australia, wanted a chic coffee table for her home but wasn’t willing to spend $2000. Instead she upcycled an old table bought for $20 from Facebook marketplace (pictured)

To transform the table, Lyla sanded back the top and bleached the woof with normal house bleach, then took the old legs off. She purchased two side tables from Kmart to use for the new legs. The simple DIY only cost around $115

Lyla bought the table from Facebook marketplace and was pleased with the end result.

‘At the moment I’m currently studying Interior Decoration, so finding sustainable ways to design a space is where a lot of my inspiration comes from and what I’ve been learning along the way,’ Lyla told FEMAIL.

She thought of the idea for the coffee table after changing the decor in her home’s formal lounge room, which had a lot of French provincial furniture.

‘I didn’t want to throw out the oval coffee table we had and had seen a gorgeous coffee table online, but the price for what I wanted was just ridiculous – some easily fetching for around $2,000,’ she said.

‘I honestly thought I can do that easily and for under $100.’

To transform the table, she sanded back the top and bleached the woof with normal house bleach, then took the old legs off.

She used two ribbed side tables from Kmart to create the new legs, which were ‘perfect’.

After gluing and screwing the new legs on the table was complete and Lyla managed to sell the coffee table for $300.

‘I have started my next project for the room that the coffee table was intended for; I’ve started the ottoman which has cost me less then the retail price again,’ she said.

Lyla also didn’t expect the positive response from others on social media and was ‘overwhelmed’ with the beautiful responses.

In the comments of the post many agreed the end result looked ‘gorgeous’, ‘stunning’ and praised Lyla for the efforts.
