Kmart trialling new checkouts and services: Here’s everything you need to know about the major changes

Kmart Australia has confirmed changes are afoot in store – with new digital initiatives and services to be put to the test.

Daily Mail understands the new ideas include moving the cash registers from the centre of the store back to the front, to make way for expanded product lines.

The changes are being trialled at the Eastland store in Melbourne – and have already been picked up by fans of the popular franchise.

One woman posted a video of the ‘new location for the registers’ back at the front of the store, admitting she was delighted by the development.

‘Having the checkouts in the middle of the store was literally the dumbest move ever,’ she said.

‘So this is such a good move from Kmart, I hope they do it across Australia.’

The store started moving the registers to the centre of the store in 2015 – but it continues to be a talking point for customers.

This is reflected in the comments on the woman’s video.

‘I couldn’t agree more! I hate the middle counter so much,’ one woman said.

‘And then they treat you like a thief by checking your receipts at the exit,’ said another.

Another laughed at the fact the ‘store of the future’ is ‘basically same as they all were before’.

Some people said they don’t care where the checkout is – they just prefer ‘staff to be more friendly’.

Kmart told FEMAIL there will be a ‘range of new store elements and ideas’ trialled at the Eastland store over the next ‘year or so’.

‘As a business, we are always looking for ways to make our customer experience better, so trying out new things is just part of what we do.’
