Knifeman stabs at least three people in ‘random’ attacks before being arrested in Norway 

At least three people were injured, including one critically, in a stabbing attack in southeastern Norway on Friday, Norwegian police said.

A suspect has been arrested, police said on Twitter, without specifying the motive for the attack and saying people appeared to have been attacked at ‘random’.

‘At this stage: three people injured and one person critically injured,’ the police wrote in a tweet.

Minutes later, they said they had the ‘suspected perpetrator’ under control.

The police referred to what they call a PLIVO emergency, meaning an ongoing violent event where lives could be in danger.

Three air ambulance helicopters accompanied by two ambulances were reported to be at the scene.

Two witnesses told the TV 2 station that the attacks took place near a Joker shop close to a church. 

Mayor Jan Gaute Bjerke in the Nore and Uvdal municipality told local media that the attack took place near a primary school.

‘The children were inside the school during the attack,’ he said. 

‘I saw the ambulances and planes that came. Some have been stabbed and it is very serious and completely tragic,’ a store worker near the scene of the attacks told TV 2. 

The attack occurred in a valley called Numedal just north of Kongsberg, where a man killed five people using knives and a bow and arrow last October.

The trial of the Danish national accused of that attack, who experts say suffers from psychiatric problems, started on Thursday.

The Muslim convert, who was listed by Norwegian security services as a person of concern as early as 2015, hacked his victims to death with a hunting knife after unleashing a torrent of arrows at innocent bystanders in a Co-Op Extra supermarket. 

CCTV footage, released by police as Bråthen’s trial began, showed how the killer strode into the store brandishing a bow with a quiver of deadly arrows and a huge hunting knife sheathed on his belt.

The 38-year-old pleaded guilty before a judge yesterday morning as the court heard how he stalked the streets of Kongsberg with dozens of arrows before stabbing five people aged 52-78, including four women, to death.
