Kylian Mbappe has been showing off his new face mask after the striker was banned from wearing his previous France-inspired design at Euro 2024.

The Les Blues captain has raced back from suffering a broken nose in his side’s opening competition victory over Austria to be available in Friday’s game with the Netherlands.

There were fears in the immediate aftermath of that game that Mbappe could miss the rest of the tournament.

However, Mbappe was named on the bench for the match by France manager Didier Deschamps but wore his new protective mask during light pre-match training drills.

On Thursday, the Real Madrid star was seen wearing a mask with the France colours in training, but hasn’t been permitted to wear it against the Netherlands led by Virgil van Dijk.

That is because Article 42 of the UEFA regulations states: ‘Medical equipment worn on the playing field must be of a single colour and must not allow the team or manufacturer to be identified.’

The 25-year-old has instead decided on wearing a neutral black mask that protects the entirety of his face and most importantly – the damaged that has since undergone surgery.

Mbappe appeared to be uncomfortable at times during the warm-ups at the Leipzig Stadium as both teams compete for the chance to go top of D.

He was however able to take part in non-contact drills and looked relaxed while interacting with his team-mates and the French coaching staff.

France supporters will hope Mbappe isn’t needed during the match so that he can be given more time to recover from his facial injury.

It is yet to be seen how the World Cup winner will cope when thrust back into the physical action of a match with opposition teams knowing his nose in an area of weakness.

Mbappe is desperate to get his goalscoring in this year’s tournament underway after previously being named amongst the favourites to win the golden boot award.
