Kylian Mbappe’s PSG future ‘set to be decided after Champions League tie with Real Madrid’

Kylian Mbappe’s PSG future ‘is set to be decided after his side’s Champions League tie with Real Madrid’, who he is poised to join this summer – with Bernabeu chiefs ‘growing increasingly confident’ they will sign him

  • Kylian Mbappe is set to walk away from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer
  • Real Madrid are in pole position to sign him, and are growing more confident
  • But AS say his future will not be decided until after the Champions League tie
  • PSG and Madrid are set to face off in mid-February and early March next year

Kylian Mbappe’s future at Paris Saint-Germain may be decided after his side’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid next year, according to reports, with the LaLiga giants still in pole position to sign him.

Despite Mbappe’s electric form at the Parc des Princes, his long-term future appears to lie away from the club, with Madrid said to be growing in confidence that they will be able to snap him up on a free transfer.

The last-16 draw for the biggest club competition in the world pitted PSG and Madrid together, and AS have claimed that no decision will be taken over the striker’s next move until the conclusion of the blockbuster tie.

Mbappe will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January 1 – but, with the showdown between two of world football’s heavyweights taking place in mid-February and early March, nothing will be signed until after then.

The same outlet have added that this is to avoid suggestions that the ace has ‘divided loyalties’, despite him having made his desire to leave clear this season.

It is believed that Madrid have ‘total belief’ that Mbappe wants to join them, and the chaos both on and off the field at PSG has only increased their bullishness.

Indeed, PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Leonardo have been described as feeling pessimistic over their prized asset putting pen to paper. Talks over fresh terms have stuttered and now come to a standstill.

And with negotiations at the impasse, Madrid will know that in just one week, they will be able to speak to Mbappe and look to tie him down for the next campaign.

AS have also pointed to several examples of Mauricio Pochettino failing to keep control at the Parc des Princes – with players having missed training after partying, Mauro Icardi embroiled in a public marriage spat and tensions breaking out.

However, PSG’s squad showed little concern for Mbappe’s contract uncertainty after they posed with their team-mate with an ‘Mbappe 2050’ shirt on his 23rd birthday.

Leonardo, meanwhile, insisted recently that the club still have ‘good possibilities’ to extend Mbappe’s deal.

He said: ‘It’s a very special situation because we are talking about the best player in the world who is coming to the end of his contract.

‘We can say that there were times when we discussed more warmly, but that is part of building a relationship.

‘People will think that we say that because we want to prolong it but it is beyond the interest of the club.

‘At 22 years old, almost 23, Kylian has reached an incredible maturity.

‘It’s a complicated situation in the sense that we would like him to stay all his life and that we have to respect that (the family’s position).

‘I think we still have good possibilities (to extend it). I believe in it.’
