LA Galaxy edge LAFC 2-1 in Pasadena in front of a record MLS crowd of 82,110 – with Riqui Puig scoring the winner in a gripping Fourth of July ‘El Traffico’
LA Galaxy beat crosstown rival LAFC 2-1 at the Rosebowl in front of a record Major League Soccer crowd of 82,110 fans in Pasadena.
Galaxy, who have endured a miserable season so far, took the lead when Tyler Boyd curled a sublime strike into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.
MLS Cup holders LAFC equalized in the second half when Ilie Sanchez peeled off his marker at the near post to flick his team level with a smart header.
But Riqui Puig, the former Barcelona midfielder, got on the end of the attack he started with a lung-busting run into the penalty area to toe-poke a deep cross home from the six-yard line.
The win for Galaxy sees the team remain second-to-last but are six points off the playoffs. For LAFC, they now drop to third.
The Fourth of July game was actually scheduled to be the first game of the season for these two teams but it was postponed due to rain in California.
