Labor MP deletes his tweet about ‘rape prevention tips’

Labor MP Darren West deleted his tweet after sharing ’10 rape prevention tips’ he believes ‘must be adhered to’.

The list of advice is believed to have originated from a meme on 9GAG and tells men not to rape women when they are sleeping, in an elevator and various other common scenarios.

‘When you encounter a woman who is asleep, the safest course of action is not to rape her,’ the post read.

‘When asking a woman out on a date, don’t pretend you are interested in her as a person; tell her straight up that you expect to be raping her later.

‘If you don’t communicate your intentions, the woman may take it as a sign that you do not plan to rape her.’

Social media users who saw the tweet before it was removed were quick to criticise with one person calling his post ‘utterly disgraceful’.

Another thought the politician was making a rape an issue to joke about, citing: ‘Again and again you have shown your true character’.

Mr West said he didn’t believe the post trivialises or mocks the ‘serious issue’ of rape and deleted it to make his point in another way.

‘I believe its purpose is to make those who hold the view that women are somehow responsible for rape feel uncomfortable,’ he told WA Today.

‘To reiterate that 100 per cent of blame for rape lies with the perpetrator and to dispel the bullshit argument that the victim is somehow to blame.

‘Women should not need to change their behaviour, men do,’ he said, echoing words shared earlier in the week by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews after the horrific alleged murder and rape of Eurydice Dixon.

The young woman had finished a comedy gig in Melbourne CBD before she walked through Princes Park where she texted her boyfriend she was ‘almost home safe’.

About three hours later the aspiring comedian was found dead just metres from her home in Carlton North.

Following her death, Mr Andrews publicly urged women to go about their lives as normal.

The politician posted the touching words online two days after the 22-year-old body was found by a passerby at a soccer field in Melbourne.

The premier said he believed men needed to change for attacks on women to stop happening otherwise ‘we’ll never change a thing’.

We’ll keep ignoring the real problem, instead of actually fixing it,’ Mr Andrews wrote.

‘Our message to Victorian women is this: stay home, or don’t.

‘Go out with friends at night. Or don’t. Go about your day exactly as you intend, on your terms.

‘Because women don’t need to change their behaviour. Men do.’
