Lakemba father in an induced coma after brutal assault and robbery in Sydney’s southwest

A father-of-two is fighting for life in hospital after he was bashed and robbed walking home from work.

Zeeshan Ahmed, 44, was metres away from his Lakemba home in Sydney’s southwest when he was attacked and suffered serious blows to his head on Saturday night.

Covered in blood, he managed to make to his Fairmount Street unit to alert his pregnant wife, before he collapsed and became unconscious.

Mr Ahmed is now in an induced coma with critical head injuries in St George Hospital.

NSW Police Inspector Rick Agius described it as a cowardly act.

‘Striking someone on the head from behind is a very callous, very horrendous offence,’ he told reporters.

‘We suspect there may have been a robbery as there’s a mobile phone that’s missing.’

It’s understood Mr Ahmed usually drives to and from his late night shifts at Woolworths in Burwood but has been forced to rely in public transport in the last fortnight after his car broke down.

Shocked neighbours who heard Mr Ahmed’s screams for help are now scared.

‘It’s a scary thing…. a lot of blood everywhere,’ Taffy told 9 News.

‘Every time whenever we saw him, he would always said, ‘hello, how are you’. He’s a really gentle man.’

A NSW Police spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia that investigations are continuing.

When asked whether or not a weapon was used in the assault, she said police have not yet released that information.

A crime scene was set up in Fairmount Street on Saturday as police investigations continued.

The alleged attacker has not been identified by police.

Anyone with information on the assault is asked to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
