Lauren and Amy wed in Australia’s first same-sex wedding

A lesbian couple who have been ‘inseparable’ since they met in a crowded bar three years ago have become the first gay couple legally married in Australia.

Lauren Price, 31, from Wales, and her new wife, Amy Laker, 29, both looked stunning in white gowns on Saturday as they said ‘I do’ and were pronounced ‘wife and wife’.

The wedding was held at Macarthur Park in Camden, south of Sydney, in front of 65 guests who appeared to be enjoying the summer sunshine, and beautiful floral display.

The brides held hands in front of an archway which was decorated in white satin, colorful summer flowers and brown bows.

Amy wore a long veil in her bright blonde hair while Lauren looked glamorous with a burst of blue through her short locks.

The brides glowed as they posed for a cheeky snap once their makeup was done – ‘Makeup done… Getting real’ Lauren wrote.

The couple had special permission to marry without giving a month’s notice to Births, Deaths and Marriages NSW, because Lauren’s family had already paid to come to Australia for the couple’s civil ceremony.

Their wedding was held three weeks before the first marriages were expected – as the usual time frame is 30 days.

The women said their celebrant Janice Bradley really helped them turn their civil celebration into a legal marriage.

‘She pushed us to do it, we wanted to be legally married but she was the one who told us to take our case to Births, Deaths and Marriages,’ Amy said.

The brides said the ten minutes they had to wait to see if their case had been approved was the ‘longest ten minutes’ of their lives.

‘Our hands were so sweaty. When she came back in and said she had good news I just started crying.’

Lauren’s family, who live in Wales, were at the wedding on Saturday and watched as the young women dedicated the rest of their lives to each other.

The couple are planning on starting a family next year and are proud to be able to do it as wife and wife.

‘For us being legally married is more about automatically being next of kin, and also because we want children so it makes that clearer, this is my child’s other mother, my wife,’ she said.

The couple are ‘really happy’ everything has worked out and grateful their marriage is legally recognised.

The couple have been together for three years and engaged for two – they revealed that neither had plans on falling in love when they first met
