  • As a result, England’s leading goal-scorer went from hero to zero on Monday

Lauren James has been sent off after stamping on her opponent during England’s round of 16 clash with Nigeria at the women’s World Cup.

James was shown a red card in the 87th minute of the game after VAR deemed her David Beckham-esque stamp as violent conduct.

The score was tied at 0-0 when James stood on Michelle Alozie – forcing Sarina Wiegman’s side to finish the game with 10 players.

Referee Melissa Borjas initially handed the 21-year-old England star a yellow card before consulting with the video assistant.

It didn’t take long for Borjas to make a decision. She returned to the pitch and pulled out a red card – telling James she had deemed the incident as violent conduct.

The incident saw James go from hero to zero. She had established herself as England’s leading scorer with three goals in the tournament before Monday’s moment of madness.
