Lauren Phillips reveals why The Kyle and Jackie O Show WON’T work in Melbourne after her ‘brutal axing’

Dumped radio host Lauren Phillips has been candid about her recent dismissal from her KIIS’ breakfast show.

And on Wednesday, Lauren told The Herald Sun that she was still hurt by the network’s decision to call time on her radio show.

‘It’s still pretty raw and pretty fresh,’ Phillips said, describing the firing as ‘brutal’.

Lauren emphasised the unique connection her program had with Melbourne audiences and said that she didn’t think a Sydney-based show would work.

‘It was very much a Melbourne show,’ she asserted. ‘We talked about the things that Melbourne wanted to talk about.’

‘It was a safe place when this great city had gone through a lot of things, from lockdowns to the cost of living. We made it a place for people to laugh and for people to cry.’

‘Our listeners wanted that and they are smart. If I walk away from it with just one person saying the show belongs to Melbourne than I would be pretty proud of that.’

It comes after Lauren appeared to be in good spirits as she and Jase playfully mocked Kyle Sandilands, 52, during their final week on the air at KIIS FM.

Lauren was discussing what the ingredients of popular Chiko Roll were, when Jase, 42, jokingly told her she was better off not knowing.

‘I think it’s former employees. They just grind them down, seriously,’ Jase told her.

‘Is that how we’re gonna end up, in Chiko Rolls? Don’t eat us!’ Lauren quipped.

Last week, it was reported that Kyle and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson signed a historic new $200million 10-year radio deal which will see them expand to Melbourne on their Sydney station – keeping them on the airwaves until 2034.

A spokesperson for ARN confirmed to Daily Mail Australia the deal means their work pals Jase and Lauren will be out of a job and their show will be finishing up in December.

Jase and Lauren’s program was successful for KIIS FM, bringing in new listeners for the station and sitting third in the Melbourne market behind Fox FM’s Fifi Fev & Nick and GOLD104.3’s Christian O’Connell.

Jase and Lauren made the shock announcement live-on air, revealing they were informed they were out of a job via a phone call from ARN bosses the night before.

Jase – who began his radio career in 2004 at Triple M and previously worked on The Kyle and Jackie O Show – sounded shattered as he recalled receiving the news at 6pm the night before while he was putting his three children – Felix, nine, and Huddy, seven and Archie, one – to bed.

‘Sad news we want to share with you. Last night we received a phone call from management informing us the show will be finishing up at the end of the year,’ Jase began the pair’s announcement.

Jase and Lauren became even more emotional as they reminisced about all the experiences they had shared during their two and a half years on the air and they revealed their final show will be on Friday, December 1.
