  • Leanne Prak, 42, was found guilty of the stabbing murder of Michael McEvoy, 65
  • The court heard the 2016 murder was a ‘spontaneous act of drunken irrationality’
  • Witness saw Prak stab Mr McEvoy through the heart, then lick the bloodied knife
  • Prosecutor described killing as unprovoked and unjustified, with intention to kill

An Adelaide woman who licked the bloodied knife she used to stab a man to death engaged in a ‘spontaneous act of drunken irrationality’, a court has been told.

Leanne Prak was found guilty of the murder of 65-year-old Michael McEvoy at a unit at suburban Holden Hill in May last year.

The 42-year-old came before the Supreme Court on Tuesday for sentencing submissions with defence counsel Jane Powell outlining her tragic life including a history of abuse and a long battle with alcohol and drug addiction.

Ms Powell asked the court to impose the mandatory minimum non-parole period of 20 years for Prak’s crime, arguing it as open for the sentencing judge to accept that she formed an intention to cause grievous bodily harm only minutes before the killing.

‘It was a spontaneous act of drunken irrationality,’ she told the court.

During her trial, prosecutor Chris Edge told the jury that Prak was drunk at the time of the attack which came during a ‘yelling match’ between her and Mr McEvoy.

At one stage Prak picked up a kitchen knife and lunged towards the victim, stabbing him through the heart.

He collapsed and it was then, Mr Edge said, a witness saw her do something ‘fairly bizarre’.

‘It appears she licked the blade of that bloodied knife,’ the prosecutor said.

In his sentencing submissions, Mr Edge said it was clear Prak had an intention to kill, inflicting eight stab wounds on Mr McEvoy.

He described the killing as unprovoked and unjustified.

Justice David Peek will impose a non-parole period in the new year.
