A learner driver who was driving so erratically that police needed to swerve to avoid the Mercedes he was driving, was allegedly also drink-driving.
The 18-year-old driver and his father, 50, were driving a white Mercedes C63 coupe when a police van allegedly had to swerve to avoid the car which was leaving a shopping centre in Melbourne’s southeast.
After pulling the car over shortly after 1.15am on Friday, the driver and father both returned a positive breath test result, police have said.

Both the driver and his father were taken back to a police station after they spotted near Thompson Road at Patterson Lakes.
The driver returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.117, while his father had a blood-alcohol reading of 0.191, police have alleged.
The 18-year-old’s learner permit was immediately suspended and he is set to be charged on summons for exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol.

He will also be charged with failing to obey a turn prohibition sign and failing to give way.
His father will be charged on summons for being an accompanying driver in charge of a motor vehicle exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol.
The car has been impounded for 30 days.
