This is the shocking moment an almost undetectable leopard attacks a herd of goats and catches its prey in front of helpless shepherds.

The shepherds, who were on a vigil after spotting the brazen leopard in the vicinity, were left in a state of shock after witnessing the incident unfold in the Nondimedu area of the Ooty district, Tamil Nadu, India.

Unbeknown to the shepherds, the almost unnoticeable animal camouflages itself among the trees and bushes before launching its attack on the powerless goat.

A local forest officer said: ‘It sneaked out of a bush and hunted the goat at lightning speed.’

During the footage the leopard is seen slowly approaching the herd from behind but it is only when it begins to run out of its hiding place that the animal is seen by the shepherds.

As the leopard pounces on the helpless creature the other goats in the herd are seen running away from the predator in an attempt to flee the vicinity.

The incident that occurred on October 1 is not the first attack in the Tamil Nadu region.

Local residents said they have seen at least five leopard attacks in the past year.

In March a 60-year-old man near the Ooty region was left seriously injured by a leopard while he was working on his field.

Forest officials have said they are now making preparations to trap the leopard.
