LeVar Burton and Bryce Dallas Howard deliver speeches as late Carl Weathers gets posthumously honored with star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

LeVar Burton and Bryce Dallas Howard spoke about the late Carl Weathers on Thursday while he was posthumously honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Weathers died at age 76 in February and was honored with the second Sports Entertainment Walk of Fame star during a ceremony in Los Angeles.

Burton, 67, delivered a speech about his late friend and called Weathers a ‘humanitarian,’ according to an article by People.

‘And I think the best tribute I can pay to him is that he was, in fact, the embodiment of a good man,’ Burton added.

‘Now, I do not use those two words in combination lightly, but Carl deserves it. In Carl’s presence …you knew that he was focused 100 percent on you,’ Burton continued. ‘He wasn’t looking around to see who more important came in the room, he was laser-locked on this now moment with you.’

The Roots star joked that he and Weathers ‘spent a lot of time naked in the sauna’ together at a spa in the Koreatown area of Los Angeles and there was ‘nothing to hide.’

‘But there are two meanings to that, because there is no artifice in the sauna,” Burton added. ‘And Carl had no problem being his authentic self in every single moment. I think his ability to be authentic was probably his greatest gift, and greatest talent.’

The Star Trek: The Next Generation star concluded by sharing that Weathers in his later years had used the personal motto ‘be peace’.

‘And I know he would want to encourage us all to live that motto as best as we are able,’ Burton said.

Weathers during his illustrious Hollywood career starred in the Rocky films as Apollo Creed opposite Sylvester Stallone, in Happy Gilmore with Adam Sandler and in Predator with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

He recently portrayed Greef Karga in The Mandalorian and also directed several episodes of the Disney+ series.

Howard, 43, also worked as a director on The Mandalorian and called Weathers a ‘titan of a man.’

‘Carl was not only one of the central stars of ‘The Mandalorian,’ he was also one of the show’s regular directors,’ said Howard, the daughter of Hollywood actor and director Ron Howard, 70.

‘It astonished me how effortlessly he wore both hats. It was truly remarkable to spin both those plates, acting and directing. Carl did it with grace, ease and enthusiasm,’ she added.

The Sports Entertainment Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was sponsored by the Las Vegas Raiders as Weathers played for the Oakland Raiders in 1970-1971.
