Lewis Hamilton is set to end speculation over his future in Formula One today with reports claiming he will report back to Mercedes’ headquarters for the first time this year ahead of the 2022 campaign.

According to The Sun, the superstar will return to the team’s Brackley base to be taken through the details on their new car, which has been designed to adhere to the new regulations introduced to make the sport more competitive.

It has been unclear for a matter of weeks whether Hamilton would race with George Russell, with the 37-year-old having taken a lengthy hiatus from the public eye after losing out on the 2021 title to Max Verstappen.

Their thrilling two-way shootout came down to the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, and Hamilton led the way for the majority of the spectacle and looked on course to wrap up a record-breaking eighth trophy.

However, race director Michael Masi failed to obey the safety car rules, which allowed Red Bull hot shot Verstappen to overtake his rival on fresher tyres.

Hamilton was silent after suffering the painful setback, but broke his protest at the weekend by finally uploading a post on social media.

Toto Wolff, the team principal, now looks likely to be able to call upon him for their title charge – having initially admitted he did not know if his ‘disillusioned’ star driver would return.  

If reports are to be believed, Hamilton starting work again at the factory today appears to indicate that he will look to surpass Michael Schumacher’s record.

Recently, he shared a clip of himself enduring an early morning run through London with his physiotherapist, Angela Cullen.

The first part of his Instagram story showed him racing in the dark at 6.35am along the Thames, with the caption ‘Good morning London.’

He was then seen moving past the London Eye, and added another caption which read: ‘Back at it with @cullen_angela.’ 

His first day at Mercedes’ base comes shortly after team-mate George Russell spent time settling into life with the heavyweight constructor.

The new season will begin in Bahrain on March 20. 

Pre-season testing, meanwhile, will take place from February 23 to 25 in Barcelona, with a second test following in Bahrain from March 10 to 12.
