LG goes toe-to-toe with Samsung with new AI enabled ultra-thin ‘Gallery Series’ TV

LG goes toe-to-toe with Samsung at CES with new AI enabled ultra-thin ‘Gallery Series’ TV that is designed to mimic a piece of art

  • LG will follow in Samsung’s steps with a TV designed to look like artwork
  • The device will be thinner than Samsung’s frame at only 20mm
  •  New TV’s will also utilize an AI processor to power more features
  • Filmmaker Mode will use AI to present movies in their original form

LG took a swipe at Samsung with a new line of OLED TV’s that will double as a ‘piece of art.’

On Monday, Korean tech company, LG, unveiled a whopping 14 new smart TVs at the Consumer Electronics Show, including a ‘Gallery Series’ that sits flush against the wall and mimics a piece of artwork.

The TVs’ outer edge is designed to mimic an actual picture frame and will come in three different sizes – a 55, 65, and 77-inch.

At CES in Las Vegas this week, LA unveiled its new GX line of OLED televisions, which it promises to be among the thinnest ever made by the company

The 65-inch model will measure just 20mm in width, making it among the thinnest TVs ever made by LG.

The TVs will mirror a premium product from Samsung, called the Frame, which was initially released in 2017.

The Frame is meant to blend into homes by mimicking a piece of artwork. The TV is only 2 inches thick and comes with various attachable framing options in wood grain and solid colors.

Both LG’s Gallery series and The Frame utilize an ‘Art Mode’ that can be used to display high definition artwork when it’s not in use.

To access Samsung’s catalog of 800 pictures, customers will have to pay an additional $4.99 per month.

The frame went on sale initially in 2017, but a new release will feature a QLED display capable of boosting the quality of even 4K picture.

LG will have an advantage over Samsung in the width department, however, since the Frame is two inches thick compared to LG’s 20mm.

On the software end, LG also unveiled a number of hardware improvements that amp up the capabilities of a newly released 8K, Oled TV called the NanoCell series.

LG outfitted its NanoCell series with a new AI Processor that leverages upgraded power and a deep learning algorithms to improve the TV’s picture quality and enable other specialized features for various types of content including movies, games and sports.

Among those features is what LG is calling Filmmaker Mode, which was designed with the help of Hollywood directors, and is meant to deliver images the way creators intended.

The Gallery series of TVs will also feature a 'Filmmaker Mode' that will disable certain effects like motion-smoothing and sharpening to ensure movies 'faithfully replicate the original vision of the director.'

The feature works by disabling certain post-processing effects like motion-smoothing, noise reduction and sharpening while preserving aspect ratios, colors and frame rates to ‘faithfully replicate the original vision of the director.’

LG will also utilize its new AI to power a slightly more controversial feature that actively listens to users’ voice commands to control the device, something which can be activated by saying, ‘Hi, LG.’

Unlike previous versions which were built into the remote control, many of LG’s newest TV’s will have a microphone built-in. The company says that users may disable their microphone at any time.
