Lily James fearlessly scales a mountain as she takes over Sylvester Stallone’s Cliffhanger role in reboot

Lily James is reaching death defying new heights in her latest role and taking over for a silver screen legend.

The Pam and Tommy star, 35, is filming the reboot of the 1993 film Cliffhanger and stars in the role once inhabited by Sylvester Stallone, 78. 

In the first shots from the Austrian production, the British actress is shown hanging from a rock face in a shot that mimics one from the original film 

Lily plays Naomi, the eldest daughter of seasoned mountaineer Ray Cooper (Pierce Brosnan).

The father-daughter duo ‘run a mountain chalet in the Dolomites. During a weekend trip with a billionaire’s son, they are targeted by a gang of kidnappers,’ an official synopsis reads.

‘Ray’s older daughter Naomi, still haunted by a past climbing accident, witnesses the attack and escapes.’

Ray is kidnapped while climbing with the son of a billionaire and Naomi must ‘save her family’ while fighting ‘for survival in the Italian Dolomites,’ the synopsis concludes.

The film is shooting in Austria, Italy and Germany and also stars Nell Tiger Free, Franz Rogowski, Shubham Saraf, Assaad Bouab, Suzy Bemba and Bruno Gouery.

‘Shooting our movie on location in the Dolomites using large format cameras was imperative for us to show the scope and scale of the story we’re telling. 

‘We’re going to bring the audience a truly thrilling and visceral, premium theatrical experience,’ director Jaume Collet-Serra said in a statement per Variety. 

‘Lily in particular has gone above and beyond for the role, putting in real training and learning to climb. 

‘Her dedication has allowed us to capture some incredible shots we couldn’t have achieved otherwise, and the whole crew is blown away by her commitment.’ 

Stallone played park ranger and mountain climber Gabe Walker in the 1993 film which took place in the Rocky Mountains.

When the reboot was originally announced in 2023 with director Ric Roman Waugh attached to direct Stallone was attached to star.

Waugh is no longer helming the film. Instead, Jaume Collet-Serra will direct the high-octane action thriller and he’s brought a whole new cast and storyline to the project.

The film is being called a father-daughter take on Die Hard and is based on a story by Ana Lily Amirpour from screenwriter Mark Bianculli.
