Lion scoops the pool at AACTA Awards

It was one of the year’s most acclaimed films.

And after taking out two BAFTA gongs earlier this year, sleeper hit Lion has scooped the pool at Wednesday night’s AACTA awards in Sydney taking out a formidable 12 awards.

The film, starring Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel, made history with pint-sized star, nine-year-old Sunny Pawar becoming the youngest ever best actor winner.

It was also a big night for Nicole, who took home two gongs – best supporting actress in a film for Lion and in a television series for the Jane Campion-produced Top Of The Lake: China Girl.

Aside from Sunny’s and Nicole’s wins, Lion barely left the names of  the presenter’s lips, taking out such high-profile awards as best film, best director for Garth Davis, best supporting actor for Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel, and best adapted Screenplay for Luke Davis.

If that wasn’t enough, the film was also recognised for Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Score and Best Production Design

While Sunny’s win proved to be quite historic, comedian Stephen Curry, who was also nominated in the best actor category for his turn in Hounds Of Love, accurately predicted the prodigious win.

Speaking with the Courier Mail on Monday, the funnyman said that Sunny was a shoe-in for the award.

‘I’m going to get beaten by a nine-year-old Indian boy,’ he told the publication.

He added: ‘It’s unbelievably, annoyingly amazing how good he is. There’s no airs or graces. You look at that kid and he’s so electric on screen.’

The emotive film tells the story of a young Indian boy who gets lost on the streets of Calcutta before being adopted by an Australian couple. 25 years later, the boy sets out to find his lost family.
