Lions’ encounter interrupted when rhino charges at them

Two lions were interrupted when by a white rhinoceros bull charged at them while trying to mate in the South African sunset.

The 70 second footage shows the pair of lions attempting to make the most of the good weather when the rhino bull enters the shot and is seen eyeing the pair up.

As the rhino walks closer to the couple, the pair quickly jump up off the ground and run away from the horned beast, keeping their eyes locked on him.

When the male takes a brief look away from the rhino to glance at his would-be mating partner, the rhino charges towards him, causing the lion to back away and the lioness to scarper a few metres back.

The video shows the bull then putting his head down and running towards the female, causing her to flee from the scene.

He then turns his attention back to the male and runs towards him, who does not seem to be taking an interest in what is going on around him, before the lion then makes a last-second dash to avoid being mauled.

The stump-horned rhino gazes at the two lions who he scared into the distance before trotting out of the camera’s range, back the way he came.

That gives a window of opportunity for the randy lions, with the lioness kneeling down in a prone position and the bushy-maned beast taking his position leaning over his mate.

After a 20 second flurry, the lion gives a huge roar hops off the back of his partner before swaggering away, while the lioness rolls onto her side, seemingly satisfied after their close encounter with the rhino.

The rhino eventually loses interest in the lions, leaving the pair who escaped without a scratch to carry on where they left off
