Lisa Wilkinson calls TV legend Bert Newton ‘one of the kindest and most generous’ people in show business – following his death at age 83


Lisa Wilkinson has shared a moving tribute to Bert Newton, after his death on Saturday at age 83. 

Posting a photo to her Instagram of Bert beside his wife, Patti Newton, 76, she wrote: ‘What a legend. And what a love story. 

‘Sending deepest condolences to and the whole family. Bert was the original, and the best.’

She continued:  ‘And one of the kindest, and most generous, that Aussie TV ever produced. 

‘May he rest in sweet peace knowing the joy he brought to so many for so long.’  

TV legend Bert died on Saturday night, after a stunning career that beamed him into the living rooms of Australians for more than 70 years.

He had been receiving palliative care at a clinic in Melbourne at the time of his death, following a long health battle that led to one of his legs being amputated in May. 

The TV personality is survived by his wife Patti, 76, daughter Lauren, 40, son Matthew, 40, and six grandchildren. 

His life will be celebrated in am upcoming state funeral in Melbourne.

Celebrity tributes poured in after the news broke, however, the biggest came from Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who posted a lengthy statement about Newton on social media just after 11pm on Friday night.

Morrison said that there will ‘never be another like him’ and credited Newton as a star of television’s ‘golden age’.

He also celebrated Newton’s marriage to wife Patti and acknowledged his ‘steadfast love’ for her.
