Little Gems Childcare, Maryborough death: Covid-19 anti-vaxxers seize on death of boy, two

Cruel trolls seize on two-year-old boy dying suddenly at a child care centre to claim he suffered Covid jab complications – but their bizarre conspiracy theory has a fatal flaw

Cruel anti-vaxxers have come under fire after falsely claiming that the tragic death of a toddler at a Queensland child care centre was due to the Covid-19 vaccine.

The town of Maryborough, on the state’s Fraser Coast, is still reeling nine days after the death of a two year-old boy at Little Gems Childcare and Early Learning Centre on July 20.

Queensland Police stressed to Daily Mail Australia last week the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Those police assurances have done nothing to stop anti-vaxxers from weighing in on the tragedy by falsely suggesting online it was due to the Covid vaccine.

It comes after a website known to spread misinformation claimed in a headline that the toddler was ‘fully jabbed’ and had died ‘mysteriously’.

The online article spurred anti-vaxxer readers into action – spreading lies about the case on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and Telegram.

But their wild conspiracy theories have since been debunked – because no Covid-19 vaccine is currently available in Australia to children aged under-5, nor have any sources close to the family said the child was vaccinated.

The Moderna vaccination was provisionally approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for use in children aged 6 months to five years on July 19, one day before the little boy died.

A probe by ABC’s fact checker CheckMate found while it is possible the boy could have been vaccinated overseas, there was no supporting evidence to prove it.

Queensland Police have reiterated its stance that ‘preliminary investigations indicate the death is not suspicious’.

It comes as the town continues to struggles to deal with the tragedy.

One mother who arrived at the child care  centre to pick up her child on the day of the boy’s death told the Courier Mail tearful staff inside were ‘absolutely beside themselves’.

‘I can’t help but feel tremendous pain for the parents,’ she said.

‘Imagine dropping your child off to daycare and never seeing them again.’

She added that her three-year-old daughter loved attending the day care centre and each of the staff.

She said staff would feel like ‘they’ve lost a child too’ after nurturing each child and ‘really taking care of the kids’
