Liverpool boss Klopp furious with late Everton penalty

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was left furious at Everton’s late penalty in the Merseyside derby which ultimately cost his side three points, and was keen to let everybody know of it in the aftermath.

The Reds were dominant throughout the tie and finally found the breakthrough via a sublime Mohamed Salah effort, but it was Dejan Lovren’s contentious push on Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the latter stages which saw the tide turn.

Referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot and Wayne Rooney duly smashed the ball home, earning a point for the Toffees and sending the Liverpool management into a furious frenzy on the touchline.

Still seething at full-time, Klopp was unable to compose himself during his post-match media commitments with Sky Sports.

Answering the questions of broadcaster Patrick Davison, Klopp said: ‘Our performance was good. We didn’t score often enough. I saw only one team playing.

‘The ref thought he had to make it a little bit more. I can’t believe the situation with all the challenges. We were clean and didn’t make any fouls.

‘There is always one nasty one – Sigurdsson made that. A clear red card. You see the picture of the penalty. Calvert-Lewin is smart and he makes a step but even then it is nothing. But it is a penalty and one team can celebrate and we can’t,’ Klopp added.

When asked what he said to ref Pawson at full-time, Klopp maintained he remained reasonable and did not swear – however the conversation quickly turned into the German boss debating with Davison whether he thought it was a spot kick.

‘I don’t understand why the ref is doing that [give the penalty]. I didn’t use one swear word. Only one team is trying over 95 minutes to win it. The other team are not in our box and didn’t have a shot on target bar the penalty,’ said Klopp.

‘Lovren doesn’t make a challenge. Calvert-Lewin makes a step. The hand is on the back. If you think it is a penalty say so. Does my opinion change anything?,’ Klopp added, before Davison admitted he thought the challenge was soft but deserving of a penalty.

‘Then we can stop the interview then I only want to speak to people with a little bit of understanding about football. I am sorry, I am wrong and you are right. Obviously I am not in the mood to answer questions,’ Klopp replied.

The result sees Liverpool continue to sit in fourth, a point above Arsenal and two behind third-placed Chelsea.

Victory would have seen the Reds pull level with the Blues on 32 points, following their shock defeat to strugglers West Ham on Saturday.
