Liverpool confirm that teenage sensation Ben Doak is ‘OK’ after sickening head clash

Liverpool have allayed fears about teenager Ben Doak’s condition after the forward collapsed on the pitch following a head clash in their UEFA Youth League match against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday.

Doak, 17, fell to the floor after jumping for a header with Sporting defender Joao Muniz, and needed immediate medical attention.

He was substituted straight away, but Under-19 manager Barry Lewtas gave a positive update on the youngster after the game.

‘Ben is OK. He couldn’t continue but our medical staff got to him quickly,’ Lewtas said.

‘He was on the pitch at the end with the lads and we will keep him closely monitored.’

The incident came just six minutes into the match, in which Rodrigo Ribeiro scored the only goal of the game after 65 minutes.

Doak stumbled a few steps after the challenge prior to his collapse, and he required treatment for around two minutes before he was replaced.

Despite the heavy collision, the Sporting player was unharmed and able to continue.

The Scotland U21 star is one of Liverpool’s most highly-rated prospects and has made five appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s first team.

He joined the Reds from Celtic last year and is tipped for a big future on Merseyside.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke has faced calls to include Doak in a senior side, but made the decision to leave him out when his latest squad was named on Tuesday.

Doak was named in the U21 squad by manager Scot Gemmill, who will be relieved by Lewtas’ update, although it remains to be seen whether Doak will be able to join up with his international team-mates in the coming days.
