Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has a special reason for wanting to reach a dream Champions League final against Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid.
Robetson was an eight-year-old schoolboy from Glasgow’s south side when Zidane scored the most memorable goal in the competition’s history a couple of miles away at Hampden Park in the 2002 final.
‘That was probably the first final (2002) I remember,’ says Roberston, whose buccaneering runs at left-back are reminiscent of another Real Madrid great from that team, Roberto Carlos.

‘As a kid you watch these incredible matches and want to play in them. I watched that final at home and remember Zidane’s unbelievable volley.’
Robertson, a boyhood Celtic fan, has become a cult hero among Liverpool fans since signing from relegated Hull City last season.
Their semi-final opponents Roma beat Barcelona 3-0 on the same night as Liverpool booked their place by completing a double over Manchester City to win 5-1 on aggregate

‘We heard the Roma score on the way to the dressing-room. We hadn’t even got into the changing room,’ he revealed.
‘Roma are an unbelievable side and the away goal was crucial for them. They nicked it and they nicked it when they were 3-0 down in Barcelona (they ended up losing 4-1) and maybe they thought the tie was over.
‘The Stadio Olimpico is not an easy place to go. They went and turned over an unbelievable side 3-0 and they deserve to be in the semi-finals.’
