Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been ruled out of the Champions League final against Real Madrid and may miss the World Cup this summer after undergoing surgery on his injured ankle.
The 20-year-old failed to fully recover from the injury sustained in the friendly against Holland during the international period back in March and aggravated the problem in recent Premier League games against West Brom and Stoke.
Gomez struggled to perform in those fixtures due to the pain and had an operation to fix the problem in his ankle this week.

But it has come at a cost with the youngster now unable to feature in Liverpool’s first Champions League final since 2007 later this month in Kiev.
It will come as a bitter blow for Jurgen Klopp with Gomez just the latest in what is becoming a catalogue of injury setbacks at Anfield, with Adam Lallana, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Emre Can and Joel Matip all set to be sidelined for some time.
Gomez has featured regularly this season but will now also miss Liverpool’s crunch tie against Brighton this weekend as Klopp’s men aim to seal Champions League football for next season.
There is no timescale on his recovery yet, but there will be a huge question mark hanging over his chances to be fit in time for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
