Liverpool ‘hold a very real interest’ in Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn as Jurgen Klopp looks to replace Georginio Wijnaldum… but Scotland star ‘has a £45-50MILLION price tag’

  • John McGinn impressed Jurgen Klopp when Liverpool lost 7-2 to Aston Villa
  • Klopp has reportedly asked Andy Robertson about his Scotland team-mate
  • But Villa hold the key cards after McGinn signed a five-year deal in December

Liverpool hold a very real interest in Aston Villa and Scotland midfielder John McGinn as Jurgen Klopp looks to replace Georginio Wijnaldum at Anfield.

That’s according to The Athletic, who report that Klopp was particularly impressed by McGinn when Villa ran out 7-2 winners against Liverpool in the Premier League last October.

Klopp reportedly asked Andy Robertson, McGinn’s Scotland team-mate, if he ‘ever stops running’ after being left impressed by his work-rate.

But Liverpool could have their work cut out trying to lure the 26-year-old away from Villa Park.

McGinn penned a fresh five-year deal with the Midlands outfit back in December, meaning Villa hold nearly all the cards if Liverpool were to put in an offer.

The Athletic add that it would take an offer in the region of £45-50million from Liverpool, or any club, for Villa to even consider parting ways with McGinn. Liverpool would have to sell to raise those funds.

They have already recruited boldly in the off-season, signing Emi Buendia from Norwich for a club record £40m and bringing Ashley Young back to the club from Italian champions Inter Milan. They are also interested in Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse.

But Villa are also braced for City to make a mega-money move for Jack Grealish, McGinn’s midfield partner.

City, Sportsmail have previously reported, are prepared to break the British transfer record and pay in the region of £100m to land the England man and Villa will be desperate to avoid losing two key men.

McGinn has played in all three of Scotland’s Euro 2020 matches but his national side are out of the tournament after Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat by Croatia.

At Liverpool, meanwhile, there is a place up for grabs in the midfield after Wijnaldum left upon the end of his contract.

The Holland midfielder, who has scored three goals at Euro 2020 so far, was widely expected to join Barcelona but eventually signed for French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite a season disrupted by numerous injuries, Liverpool finished third in the Premier League in 2020-21, while Villa came 11th.
