Thiago Alcantara’s injury nightmare has been prolonged with the Liverpool midfielder suffering a fresh setback only five minutes into his latest comeback.

The 32-year-old suffered a muscular problem in Sunday’s defeat at Arsenal and could be out for several weeks.

His cameo at the Emirates as an 85th-minute substitute was his first appearance of the season because of a hip injury.

It is the latest blow for the Spanish international whose career at Anfield has been blighted by various medical issues since his £20million move from Bayern Munich in 2020.

Different hamstring, thigh and knee problems have restricted him to 51 Premier League starts though he remains a cult figure with The Kop because of his silky skills and passing range.

Thiago is likely to leave Liverpool when his contract runs out in the summer but sources have tried to dampen fears this latest injury could mean he’s already played his last game for the club.

No timeframe has been put on his return but there is no indication that it’s long-term.

His last start for Liverpool was in a 3-0 defeat at Wolves last February since when he’s made five appearances as a substitute.

His latest absence adds to Jurgen Klopp’s selection problems for Saturday’s game against Burnley.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Stefan Bajcetic, Ben Doak, Joel Matip, Mo Salah and Kostas Tsimikas injured are injured with central defender Ibrahima Konate suspended after his red card in the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal.

Liverpool will be boosted however by the return of holding midfielder Wataru Endo whose Asian Cup commitments are over following Japan’s exit.

Thiago is regarded as one of the best technical players of his generation and has also played for Barcelona and Bayern.

But injuries have denied him the opportunity of showing his best form in the Premier League.
