Liverpool stars arrive at Melwood ahead of Manchester City clash

Liverpool players have arrived at their Melwood training ground to undertake Jurgen Klopp’s traditional matchday session ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League tie against Manchester City.

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Nathaniel Clyne were all spotted driving into Liverpool’s headquarters on Wednesday morning as they begin final preparations ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Klopp has made a habit of running his players through a very light session on the day of the match and they will travel to Anfield straight from the training ground, a short 10-minute drive.

Their counterparts will be able to do the same after Manchester City reached an agreement with Everton to use Goodison Park on both Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

Traditionally, the away team are permitted to train at the host stadium the night prior to the match, but their options have been broadened by the fact that the two clubs sit just 35 miles apart.

Klopp would have liked to have a plan similar to City’s ahead of next week’s second leg, but admits their plans to travel to Manchester have so far been derailed by their failure to find a pitch to train on the morning of the match.

The German told reporters: ‘We would have liked to train next week in Manchester ahead of the away game but we didn’t get a pitch for the next morning.

‘No Manchester club could give us a training pitch for the next morning.

‘Man City can train tomorrow at Goodison – that gives me something for Saturday but nothing for now. I have no clue, ask Pep, then call me and tell me.’

Liverpool are yet to inform UEFA whether they will take up the chance to train at the Etihad on Monday evening.
