Liverpool vs Union St Gilloise – Europa League LIVE: Jurgen Klopp’s Reds chase another win in Europe… plus other 8pm updates including Aston Villa’s Europa Conference League fixture

That was a quiet week, wasn’t it?

Five days on from their last-gasp defeat at Tottenham, the fallout from the VAR howler that cost Liverpool a goal rumbles on.

In case you’ve been living under a rock over the past week, here’s a quick recap of what happened.

Liverpool were denied a goal in incredible circumstances on Saturday evening after a calamitous VAR howler.

Diaz’s strike was disallowed by VAR official Darren England, who wrongly believed the on-field decision had been a goal, so said ‘check complete’ once he ascertained that the Colombia winger was onside.

Instead of a goal being awarded, the match resumed with a free-kick to Spurs.

Referees’ chiefs later admitted to a ‘significant human error’ and released the audio of the conversation between England, referee Simon Hooper and VAR officials after Liverpool had specifically demanded for the tape to be made public.

On Wednesday, Jurgen Klopp demanded that Liverpool’s defeat at Spurs be replayed , saying it would be the ‘right thing’ to do after PGMOL owned up to the mistake.

Liverpool finished the game with nine men, after Curtis Jones’ yellow card for a challenge on Yves Bissouma was upgraded to red following the intervention of VAR and Diogo Jota received his marching orders after picking up two yellows in just over a minute.

All in all, it’s fair to say PGMOL’s officials are unlikely to be welcomed around Anfield for pre-Christmas pints in December.

There was no such drama for Villa, who routed Brighton 6-1 at Villa Park to climb up to fifth in the Premier League table, a point below fourth-placed Liverpool.
