‘This guy twice had Kante dance past him as if he had Jacques Cousteau boots, lead boots on’: Liverpool’s Fabinho slammed by Graeme Souness after Super Cup victory over Chelsea
- Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties to lift the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday
- However, they were far from their free-flowing best against their English rivals
- And Graeme Souness has slammed Fabinho for his lacklustre performance
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has hit out at midfielder Fabinho for a lacklustre performance against Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup.
Jurgen Klopp’s side went on to lift the European trophy thanks to a penalty shootout victory in Istanbul after the teams couldn’t be separated following extra-time.
Liverpool, who won last season’s Champions League, were far from their best as they had to come from behind after Olivier Giroud’s well-taken strike gave Chelsea the lead in the first-half.

N’Golo Kante also enjoyed a formidable performance in the midfield for the Blues, with Liverpool struggling to deal with the France World Cup winner’s high energy.
And Souness has since slammed Fabinho’s and Liverpool’s inability to deal with Chelsea’s ever-reliable star, claiming he had Jacques Cousteau boots on – who was a French undersea explorer, researcher and photographer.
He told Virgin Media Sport Ireland: ‘This guy [Fabinho], twice he had Kante dance past him as if he had Jacques Cousteau boots, lead boots on.
‘They were not Liverpool. I’m not seeing a Liverpool that resembles the Liverpool we saw last season.
Souness claimed that the Brazilian midfielder played as if he had ‘lead boots on’ vs Chelsea
‘I’m amazed Liverpool were more tired than Chelsea – they’ve had two extra days to rest.’
Souness, who played for the Reds between 1978-84 where he won three European Cups and five First Division titles, will be desperate for his former side to improve drastically this weekend.
Liverpool travel to Southampton on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League, just over two days on from their exertions in Istanbul against Chelsea.
