Tragedy: Six people were killed when a cargo ship smashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore in March
Lloyd’s of London insurer Hiscox has set aside £22million to cover claims linked to collapse of the Baltimore bridge in the US.
The disaster in March, when a cargo ship smashed into the a bridge and killed six people, was the prelude to a difficult summer for insurers.
An early start to the hurricane season wreaked havoc, alongside last month’s global IT meltdown – neither affected Hiscox however.
The update came as the company, which was last month touted as a takeover target amid reports that rivals in Japan and Italy were poised to swoop, said profits rose 7.1 per cent to £223million in the first half, lower than analysts expected.
Shares fell 1.8 per cent, or 21p, to 1148p.
